Donald & Joan Brogden Fellowship

Donald and Joan Brodgen made a lasting impact on the Maribyrnong College (then Maribyrnong High School) community through their dedication, expertise and passion for education. Both long-serving teachers, they are fondly remembered for the energy and care they brought to their classrooms and the inspiration they provided to generations of students.

Donald, who taught Chemistry, was a highly respected educator whose enthusiasm for science sparked curiosity and achievement in his students. Joan, a gifted teacher of English and a driving force behind the school’s Performing Arts program, championed creativity, confidence and self-expression. Her leadership helped establish a vibrant culture of performance that continues to enrich school life today. As former students have shared, “Joan Brogden remains the most memorable and inspiring teacher I had. She was the one great influence in my life from high school,” and “A brilliant teacher and a remarkable person.” In recognition of her contribution, the school’s theatre was renamed the Joan Brogden Theatre in 2011.

Joan passed away in 2015 and Donald in 2020. In 2020–21, their estate established the Donald & Joan Brodgen Fellowship Fund, ensuring their legacy continues by supporting future generations of students to pursue excellence in education.

The Donald & Joan Brogden Fellowship Fund is designed to assist Maribyrnong College students who may otherwise not have the opportunity to participate fully in their education or to provide educational enhancement, specifically in the fields of performing arts and/or STEM.
